Nowadays we can basically find everything we need or want online, including hearing aids. But, like the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for”. In this case, hearing aids are tricky to get exactly right in an over-the-counter type of setting. Much like our finger prints, our ear shapes are all different making it very difficult for a mass-produced over-the-counter hearing aid to really work as hearing aids are intended.

We’ve discussed ear wax becoming a blockage for your hearing, and medications that can be poisonous to your hearing (ototoxicity). Now let’s cover Tinnitus and your hearing health. Tinnitus is an awareness of a sound in the ear or head that is not caused by actual external noise. Many people assume experiencing Tinnitus means you are experiencing hearing loss. This is not always the case. In fact, nearly 50 percent of individuals who experience Tinnitus don’t show any measurable sign of hearing loss at all.

Yup, we’re talking about ear wax. Everyone has it, no one really likes it, so what does it do and what happens when we have too much ear wax?

Let’s start with a little brief anatomy lesson. Inside of our ears, in our canals, we all have little hair follicles and glands. This area produces an oily substance called cerumen. You probably guessed it, but we call this substance ear wax. Ear wax has a specific function, which is to protect our ear canals from all kinds of things, such as bacteria, dust, dirt, etc. Ear wax also protects our ear canals against water and excess moisture. In fact, ear wax is very natural and very healthy to have in your ears.
