Hearing loss can be caused by aging, as well as noise, disease and heredity. Although some people do experience age-related hearing loss, this does not mean that it should be left untreated. Unfortunately, many people who experience hearing loss purchase mail-order hearing devices and/or over-the-counter (OTC)hearing aids without consulting an Audiologist. Although some people may get lucky and such devices could be useful to them, the majority of people who purchase OTC hearing aids end up giving up on the devices due to inaccurate programming for their specific hearing loss.
Hearing Loss Research
Based on an abundance of hearing loss research over the last several years, researchers have determined that “older adults with hearing loss have a greater risk of developing dementia than older adults with normal hearing capabilities. Cognitive abilities (including memory and concentration) decline faster in older adults with hearing loss than in older adults with normal hearing. Treating hearing problems may be important for cognitive health.” Hearing loss is a very common condition, especially in older adults. Although hearing loss can hugely impact many areas of your life, if you choose to leave your hearing loss untreated, it can be even more detrimental to living a long healthy brain life.
Do You Wear Your Hearing Aids?
Did you know that many people experiencing hearing loss give up and do not wear hearing aids? The increasing number of people living with hearing loss has increased substantially just over the past few years. In fact, less than a quarter of people with hearing loss who could benefit from hearing instruments wear them. On average, it takes a person with hearing loss about seven years to seek treatment for their hearing loss. Unfortunately, that period-of-time allows for a significant period of cognitive [brain] decline that could be prevented. Hearing loss can cause the connections in our brain to become reordered and confused. Hearing aids can help by preventing this reordering from occurring.
