We’ve discussed ear wax becoming a blockage for your hearing, and medications that can be poisonous to your hearing (ototoxicity). Now let’s cover Tinnitus and your hearing health. Tinnitus is an awareness of a sound in the ear or head that is not caused by actual external noise. Many people assume experiencing Tinnitus means you are experiencing hearing loss. This is not always the case. In fact, nearly 50 percent of individuals who experience Tinnitus don’t show any measurable sign of hearing loss at all.
What is Tinnitus & what causes it?
There are many causes of Tinnitus, aside from hearing loss. Tinnitus can be cased by a variety of health problems, such as damage and loss of the sensory hair cells within the inner ear, age progression and even prolonged exposure to very loud noises (concerts/machinery etc.). Some people however do experience Tinnitus in association with high frequency hearing loss. In this case, hearing aids can help elevate or even eliminate the sounds of Tinnitus.
Signs of Tinnitus
Occasional or often “ringing” in the ears. You can also experience a “buzzing” or “high-pitch” tone as a result of Tinnitus. Tinnitus may be present all the time or the sounds may come and go. Tinnitus can worsen with age for some people.
What to do to help relieve Tinnitus
Whenever anything occurs in the body that is out of the ordinary, it is always better to seek medical advice. We recommend seeing an expert who can help assess your specific Tinnitus and objectively evaluate any individual underlying health issues, identify if your Tinnitus is associated to hearing loss and/or recommend options to help minimize the impact Tinnitus has on your life.
