Yup, we’re talking about ear wax. Everyone has it, no one really likes it, so what does it do and what happens when we have too much ear wax?
Let’s start with a little brief anatomy lesson. Inside of our ears, in our canals, we all have little hair follicles and glands. This area produces an oily substance called cerumen. You probably guessed it, but we call this substance ear wax. Ear wax has a specific function, which is to protect our ear canals from all kinds of things, such as bacteria, dust, dirt, etc. Ear wax also protects our ear canals against water and excess moisture. In fact, ear wax is very natural and very healthy to have in your ears.
The question then becomes; at what point does ear wax begin to impact our hearing abilities? For most people, ear wax takes care of itself. By this I mean that ear wax works its way to the outer area of the ear where we can rinse/wipe it away or it falls out on its own. There are, however, a certain population of people who have glands that over produce ear wax. Excessive ear wax can build-up and harder in the ear canal. It’s possible you may not even realize it’s there.
When ear wax builds up and hardens within the ear canal, often referred to as impacted wax, this can cause an obstruction in the ear canal making it difficult to for sound waves to travel to your inner ear. In fact, ear wax build-up is one of the most common causes of hearing loss across all age groups.
Signs You May Have an Ear Wax Blockage:
- Your ears feel like they are clogged and/or you feel like you are in a tunnel
- Experience a ringing noise (Tinnitus) in your ears
- You experience a partial loss of hearing that seems to worsen over time
Ear wax blockage induced hearing loss is known as conductive hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss means that sound waves are being prevented from reaching the eardrum. The good news is that this type of hearing loss is easily identified and treated by an Audiologist or Hearing Instrument Specialist.
